A Word About Compromise

I've written here before about the time-consuming nature of policy-making. Now I'd like to explain something that always happens to policy along the way: compromise.

The political waters are rife with groups opposed to seemingly un-objectionable ideas. If, for example, you are trying to pass a bill requiring puppies receive love, there is undoubtedly a group opposed. And ultimately, if the puppy haters are politically active and connected, you will probably have to give up something to move your policy forward. This is called political compromise.

Compromise is the nature of politics. If you are not willing to compromise or be flexible about a policy request, don't bother. You will be disappointed, your organization will not get what it wants out of the process, and you might actually do damage to your larger mission in the process.

Know your lines in the sand, certainly, but be prepared for puppy haters, no matter what you're asking for.
